The Ocean Drum is a modern percussion instrument designed to replicate the sound of ocean waves. It consists of a shallow, cylindrical frame with a transparent drumhead on at least one side. Inside the drum are hundreds to thousands of small metal beads or pellets. When the drum is tilted or rocked, these beads roll across the internal surface of the drumhead, producing a continuous, rushing sound that closely resembles the sea.

How to Play It

You play the ocean drum not by striking it, but by moving it. The common technique is to hold the drum frame horizontally with both hands and gently roll your wrists, allowing the drum to tilt in various directions. This motion causes the beads inside to flow back and forth. The speed and angle of your tilt control the volume and intensity of the "wave" sound; a slow, gentle rock creates a calm tide, while a faster, sharper movement can mimic crashing waves.

It is frequently used in sound therapy, meditation, and yoga practices to create a peaceful atmosphere and aid relaxation.
